Structural Metadata
Current practice is reflected in
https://dldc.lib.uchicago.edu/dl/collections/campub-specs-limb.html#sec-6-7. The
following represents the method of recording structural metadata for
Chopin Early Editions.
- project
- document
- object
- page
- component
- milestone
Notes:
- project + document + object is the basis for file-naming
conventions, e.g., chopin005-001.tif, or the digital master copy of
the first object in the fifth document scanned for the chopin
project. See File-Naming Conventions for
Derivative Images, with Scaling Information for how service
copies are named for digital still image projects.
- project is decided in advance of scanning, document is the number
of the document scanned, and object is the number of the scanned
image. the maximum number for documents and objects are decided in
advance, and left-padding with zeros occurs if necessary. document
numbering is arbitrary (first scanned, first numbered), while object
numbering follows the order of pages in the document being
scanned.
- pages are indicated only if a page number exists. this allows a
program to implement page citation. milestones are decided in advance
on a per-project and per-document basis. components are "1" by
default. "2," etc. would be used if pagination repeats, to
disambiguate, for example, which page 1 is meant.
Example:
"project" "document" "object" "page" "component" "milestone"
"chopin" "005" "001" "" "1" "Cover"
"chopin" "005" "002" "" "1" ""
"chopin" "005" "003" "" "1" ""
"chopin" "005" "004" "2" "1" "Third movement: Marche funebre"
"chopin" "005" "005" "3" "1" ""
"chopin" "005" "006" "4" "1" ""
"chopin" "005" "007" "5" "1" ""
"chopin" "005" "008" "6" "1" "Fourth movement: [Finale], Presto"
